Open Water Swimming - Returns in May 2020

Ballyhass Mallow is the perfect training venue for open water swimming and off-road running!


  • The lakes are safe & clean. 

  • Our site is fully serviced with free, secure car parking, changing rooms, and warm showers.

  • There is a first aid trained safety observer present during all swimming sessions

Dates & Times:

  • Friday Evenings 7pm - 9pm (Last entry 8.30pm)

  • Sunday Mornings 8 am - 10 am (Last entry 9.15am).

  • Season Opens May 17th 2019. 

  • Season Closes August 30th 2019.

How do I sign up?

  • Check into the office and sign a Ballyhass smart Waiver & registration form. Each session you will receive a wrist band after paying that must be worn at all times while swimming in the lake. Season pass holders must also check in and get a wrist band. 

  • Anyone new to open water swimming must make themselves known to the reception on the day.

Where do I swim?

  • Friday evenings, Entry via Deepwater or walk-in beach. Below houses.

  • Sunday Mornings, Entry via deep water only. (Wakepark)

Rules & Guidelines

  • You must be capable of completing an 800-metre continuous swim.

  • This is for distance swimming only. No recreational swimming is allowed.

  • You must not have any medical condition (such as Heart disease, Asthma, Epilepsy, Diabetes) which may impact my ability to safely partake in the open water swimming. If unsure please seek advice from GP.

  • You must sign in at the Ballyhass reception before each swim and ensure you understand the session timings and which area of the lake to use. You will be given a wrist band on payment and this must be worn during your swim. Only participants with wristbands should be in the water. 

  • All participants must sign an online waiver form and fill out a registration form. 

  • All swimmers must be registered with either swim Ireland, Tri Ireland or another national governing swimming body. 

  • You must wear a brightly coloured swim hat at all times and wear a wetsuit if the water temperature is below 14oC

  • You must enter and exit the water at the designated points

  • In the event, you get into difficulty during the swim session roll on to my back and signal for rescue by raising an arm in the air. 

  • A Ballyhass safety officer will be present on site during all swim sessions, however, Ballyhass will not provide full lifeguard cover. Because of this, you must not swim alone. You must attend the lake with a buddy and stay with them during the session. Alternatively, you must swim within a 15m distance of another swimmer during the session. In the event of seeing another swimmer getting into difficulty, You must raise the alarm.

  • In the event of a thunderstorm, failing light, fog or high winds the safety officer may decide to end a session. If you are asked to exit the lake then please do so immediately

  • You must acknowledge that the lake is a natural environment. Lake banks may be slippery, there may be sharp stones underfoot. There are various ramps, buoys and ropes within the water which must be avoided. If you do not feel comfortable with these hazards then you should not swim in this open water environment

  • Anyone swimming without a registration band will be asked to exit the lake immediately.
