Explore Lee Valley Kayak Tour

Experience the perfect blend of history, wildlife, and adventure on the Lee Valley Kayak Expedition

Get up close and personal with the local wildlife and nature on our Lee Valley Kayak Expedition, while fully supervised by our team leaders. This stretch of water is a fascinating blend of history and wildlife. It is roughly a 2.5 km stretch of river.

You will be able to paddle in and around the castle and explore with your guides. Stop for a quick snack and then we will head back through the reed bed section on our way back to base. We will explore the history of how the hydroelectric dams brought power to rural Ireland and why they are considered the start of the ‘Quiet Revolution’ in Ireland. In the expedition we will learn about the 16th century Carrigadrohid Castle. The role it played in the Cromwell War on Ireland and its unique setting, being one of only two castles built over the water on a bridge in Europe.

The tours are run in double sit on top sea kayaks and single kayaks that are super stable and easy to paddle. This makes the tour very accessible for all levels of abilities. You will be provided with wetsuits to keep you warm. You can use one of our dry bags if you would like to bring your valuables.

What do I need to know about this tour?

  • You need to have a reasonable level of fitness (5km return trip)
  • Perfect for corporate, sports, and youth days out.
  • Make sure to bring some snacks with you for the stop at the castle.
  • Perfect for teenagers and adults

Will I get wet?

You have the choice of staying dry. Our fleet of double sit-on kayaks is extremely sturdy and will keep you and your partner out of the water. However, if you desire, you can jump in during warm summer evenings.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Not at all. Please inform us in advance, but keep in mind that you will be wearing a lifejacket throughout the tour. In the unlikely event that you fall into the water, the lifejacket will keep you afloat with your head and shoulders above the waterline. Our guides are always nearby and ready to assist.

Can my partner and I join the tour?

Absolutely. We have public tours available several times a week during the season. Simply select a date and check for available times. While you can be joined by up to 10 other people in your group, it is also a great opportunity to meet new people in a unique outdoor setting.
